Community Representation Statement & Policy

The Communications Act of 1934 (47 U.S.C. §396, et seq.) requires the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to support “noncommercial programming of an educational or informational nature” and programs “representing diverse interests and perspectives … including services to underserved audiences.” The act also requires that CPB make public media’s content available for free to rural and urban audiences throughout the United States. This is accomplished through community service grants to stations like KUEN.

Locally owned and operated public media stations, such as KUEN, are uniquely connected to American communities and are positioned to reflect and serve the diverse and varying populations of their communities. KUEN’s FCC broadcasting license is held by the Utah Board of Higher Education. Management responsibilities are assigned in state law to the Utah Education and Telehealth Network (UETN) under the administrative oversight of the University of Utah (U.C.A. 53B-17-101).

As a public media organization, UETN’s mission is deeply rooted in representing and reflecting the rich tapestry of voices, experiences and perspectives of all who call Utah home. UETN’s commitment to communities traditionally underserved by media, healthcare and technology is central to its success and the public trust stakeholders place in UETN.

The UETN Board affirms its commitment to the following:
